We are back to the regular show after our Vancouver International Film Festival hiatus, and we’ve got a huge video game adaptation that might rope in a large audience with nostalgia, a survival thriller with an insane premise and a few of the films from the festival now in regular release.
This week’s picks:
Street Fighter – The aesthetic and the cast are very well fleshed out but does this video game movie sink or soar?
Whalefall – Grief and father-son estrangement play a major role in Austin Abrams second escape thriller of the year. Yeah, he’s inside a whale…
Fjord – The Palme d’Or winner at Cannes this year, this film puts every ideology into a fascinating dark gray area.
The Only Living Pickpocket – John Turturro chews scenery in this great sleight-of-hand drama.
Possible Love – My longest film of the Vancouver International Film Festival but damn near my favorite, this Korean class exploration had me in the palm of its hand.
VisionQuest – Paul Bettany and James Spader are back as their AI characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s wrap-up to the WandaVision trilogy.
Looking forward to next week:
Clayface, Wildwood, Fatherland, Wicker, You Can See Everything, & Sons and Resident Evil
