Breaking down all things pop culture

This week on What The Hell Should I Watch?, I’m diving into one of the biggest surprise horror discoveries of the year (and it’s CANADIAN!), a bold new swing from Julia Ducournau, sharp indie comedy gems, hurricane sharks on Netflix, and a quick check-in with Invincible Season 4.

🎬 Fresh For Your Eyeballs

First up is Hunting Matthew Nichols, the local BC docu-horror mystery that completely blindsided me. What starts like a true-crime missing-persons documentary slowly mutates into a found footage nightmare, with a deeply satisfying ending and one of the strongest third-act pivots I’ve seen this year. This could absolutely become a slow-burn horror hit of 2026.

Then there’s Alpha, Julia Ducournau’s follow-up to Titane, which leans into her most dramatic and allegorical filmmaking yet. It’s bold, unsettling, and another reminder that she remains one of the most fearless voices working today.

I also check out Fantasy Life, a charming New York indie rom-com with Amanda Peet and Matthew Scheer, plus For Worse, Amy Landecker’s funny and painfully honest wedding comedy-drama about divorce, sobriety, and bad decisions. Both are strong under-the-radar discoveries.

📺 The Streaming Pile

On Netflix, Thrash gives Tommy Wirkola the keys to a flooded city, hungry sharks, and total B-movie nonsense. It’s goofy, under 90 minutes, and exactly the kind of mindless disaster horror time-waster that works on a Friday night.

I also briefly check in on Invincible Season 4, which feels like everything has been building toward the massive Mark / Omni-Man reunion and the looming Viltrumite war. Even a couple episodes in, it already feels huge.
