Steve Stebbing

Breaking down all things pop culture

Hey everyone! Welcome back to What the Hell Should I Watch? I’m Steve Stebbing, and this week, I’m flying solo as Chloe is off moving (good luck to her!).

We’re talking about the latest releases, starting with Flight Risk, the new thriller starring Mark Wahlberg, Michelle Dockery, and Topher Grace—directed by the ever-controversial Mel Gibson. Is it worth the watch, or is it another January throwaway?

Next up, I dive into I’m Still Here, the Brazilian drama now nominated for an Academy Award, and Universal Language, the Canadian indie film making waves on the awards circuit.

On the streaming front, I check out the buzzy new series Paradise on Disney+, the stand-up special Matt Rife: Lucid, and the animated Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.

Plus, I wrap up my thoughts on Dune: Prophecy, dig into some new additions to my collection (including The Searchers in 4K and Mayor of Kingstown Season 3), and preview next week’s review of Dog Man.

Hey everyone! Welcome back to What the Hell Should I Watch? I’m Steve Stebbing, joined by my co-host Chloe Stebbing, and in this episode, we’re diving into a mix of the latest films and hidden gems.

We discuss Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man—does it deliver on its horror promises? Plus, we revisit Presence, Steven Soderbergh’s unique ghost story, which we had the privilege of seeing at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 2024. Now that it’s finally being released to a wider audience, we’re breaking down why this wholly original take on a ghost story is worth your time.

We also explore Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths, Amy Adams’ surreal and daring Nightbitch on Disney+, and the action-comedy Back in Action, marking Cameron Diaz’s return to film after over a decade, alongside Jamie Foxx.

Lastly, we share some Blu-ray recommendations, including The Substance and Rumours, and Chloe’s take on the outrageous low-budget dinosaur flick, Area 407.

This week, Chloe and I dive into our Top 10 Movies of 2024, including a gothic reimagining of Nosferatu, a hard-hitting emotional drama with Can I Get a Witness, and an animated masterpiece with Flow. Plus, I reflect on Sean Baker’s Anora and the surprising artistry of Furiosa. Chloe also reveals why A Quiet Place: Day One might be the best in the franchise and gushes about Monkey Man’s bold creativity. Join us for all this and much more on this week’s episode of What the Hell Should I Watch?

Missing the episode last week? Well, so was I as my computer decided to go rogue and deprive you of it! No worries, I made a redo, and now last week’s mistake is this week’s new episode! Sonic and pals make it a trilogy of fun plus, I get your eyeballs on two of the year’s best films! I also give my thoughts on a massively polarizing sci-fi TV series.

The Sony side of the Marvel Studios collaborations comes to an end with Kraven The Hunter but does Aaron Taylor Johnson make it epic? I dig into that as the lead film, documentary filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer’s narrative feature debut, The End, and Clint Eastwood’s final bow, Juror #2. I’ve got some great streaming recommendations and post-finale thoughts on the best Taylor Sheridan show on Paramount+ and the greatest Star Wars animated series I’ve ever seen.

This week’s episode contains one of my final “Most Anticipated Films Of 2024” as I got to check out Robert Eggers’ take on a classic vampire story. Frank Grillo adorns a scientist’s degree along with his insane abs in the action horror Werewolves, Ralph Fiennes is ripped and ready for a fight as well, Iliad style, in The Return and I was not emotionally prepared for Ghostlight and you won’t be either. All of this plus I give my final spoiler-filled thoughts on The Penguin, now over for a few weeks.

This week on the show, I feel convinced that The Rock is trying to actively sap all of my Christmas spirit at the beginning of the holiday month. Another animated movie made me cry, a definite future Oscar nominee, I dig into the first ever Dreamworks film, now available on blu-ray, and I saw the real appeal of Rita Hayworth, all in gorgeous 4K. I also get to give a couple of post mortems on some very polarizing television. All of this plus a cool gift suggestion for all of the horror/sci-fi lovers on your shopping lists!

Call it Glicked, Wickiator or whatever you want, I saw both films and my thoughts on both of them may surprise you as it did me! Martin Scorsese offers up a documentary of a pivotal time in the history of The Beatles, I dug into my 4K of Wes Craven’s greatest gift to horror cinema and I received a hell of an early holiday present. All this plus my House Of The Dragon wrap-up, with the release of season 2 on 4K.

We’ve got a jam-packed episode of great goodies this week as I have nothing but good things to say about Hugh Grant’s new thriller, Heretic, as well as the most fun I’ve had with a film this year, Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, a movie that boasts the best cast of the year in my opinion. Warner Bros. has a trio of fantastic classics in the upgraded 4K format, a VIFF premiere gets its Netflix streaming debut, the Dune franchise expands to television and Disney+ has two of the best new shows of 2024 just as the year draws to a close. All this and more on this brand new What The Hell Should I Watch!
