Breaking down all things pop culture

Well, technology may have tried to defeat this episode, but I persevered, slayed the dragon, and now it’s ready for your earholes!

This week on What The Hell Should I Watch?, Chloe and I dive into a packed lineup of movies hitting theaters, festivals, and streaming. I spent most of the long weekend in cinemas, gearing up for this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival, and we’ve got plenty to break down for you.

We kick things off with The Roses, a modern remake of The War of the Roses starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. Then I get into one of my more anticipated films, Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing with Austin Butler, Zoe Kravitz, Regina King, and Bad Bunny. From there, things get messy (in the best way) with the wild new Toxic Avenger reboot and the Canadian creature feature Scared Shitless.

On the streaming pile, we cover Vanessa Kirby in Night Always Comes, the animated misfire Fixed from Genndy Tartakovsky, and much more. Chloe also shares her hot take on War of the Worlds (yes, the Ice Cube one) and, finally, gives her thoughts on Bring Her Back, another common Australian horror film W.

👀 Movies we talk about this week:

The Roses (remake of War of the Roses)

Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing

The Toxic Avenger

Scared Shitless

Night Always Comes (Netflix)

Fixed (Netflix)

War of the Worlds (Ice Cube edition)

This week on What the Hell Should I Watch? I’m flying solo, but I’ve got a stacked lineup of movies and streaming picks to dig into.

I kick things off with Baby Assassins 3: Nice Days, the latest entry in the quirky Japanese action-comedy series. Then I dive into Sorry Baby — a powerful debut from Eva Victor that I truly believe is one of the best films of 2025 so far.

I also cover David Cronenberg’s The Shrouds, a deeply strange yet beautiful meditation on grief, technology, and body horror, starring Vincent Cassel and Diane Kruger.

On the streaming front, I check out Eeny Meeny with Samara Weaving, a fast-paced heist film packed with sharp action and fun performances, now streaming on Disney+. Unfortunately, things dip with Amazon’s The Pickup, pairing Eddie Murphy and Pete Davidson in a dud that wastes its cast and runtime.

For physical media collectors, I highlight some great new releases, including The Conjuring on 4K, the live-action Lilo & Stitch remake in steelbook, Karate Kid Legends, and Locked with Bill Skarsgård and Anthony Hopkins.

And as always, I tease what’s coming next week — from Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing with Austin Butler, to The Toxic Avenger, to Chloe’s scathing take on War of the Worlds.

This week on What the Hell Should I Watch? I’m diving into some big new releases and hidden gems you need to know about. First up, Bob Odenkirk returns in Nobody 2, the sequel to the surprise action hit that mixes everyday suburban dad life with brutal assassin mayhem. I break down what works, what doesn’t, and why Connie Nielsen might actually steal the movie.

I also take a look at My Mother’s Wedding, the directorial debut from Kristin Scott Thomas, starring Scarlett Johansson, Sienna Miller, and Emily Beecham. With family drama, layered performances, and some surprising connections, it’s one that deserves attention—even if it doesn’t quite land the emotional punch it’s aiming for.

On the streaming side, I cover Disney+’s The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, exploring how the real-life story stacks up against this dramatized miniseries. Plus, I share some new additions to my physical media library, including The Long Kiss Goodnight, Anthony Bourdain: A Cook’s Tour, Generation Kill, and even the classic Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman.

And Chloe joins me with her review of Jurassic World: Rebirth, where dinosaurs, chaos, and plenty of nostalgia take center stage.

If you love movies, streaming series, action, indie gems, and the occasional deep cut from my Blu-ray shelf, this episode is packed with recommendations you won’t want to miss.

This week on What the Hell Should I Watch?, I’m diving into a stacked lineup of films and series that had me hooked from start to finish. First up, I break down Zach Cregger’s Weapons — a tense, perspective-shifting horror with Josh Brolin, Julia Garner, and Amy Madigan that proves Cregger is more than a one-hit Barbarian wonder. Then it’s onto Disney’s 22-years-later sequel Freakier Friday, reuniting Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, plus an unexpectedly heartfelt indie gem, East of Wall, set in the South Dakota Badlands. I also swing into high-flying martial arts with the gorgeous Chinese wushu epic Invincible Swordsman.

On the streaming side, I finally get to talk about Alien: Earth on Disney+ — Noah Hawley’s gripping new Alien series packed with xenomorphs, strange new creatures, and Timothy Olyphant in full genre mode.

Chloe joins me to rave about Warfare, a gritty, emotional Iraq War drama starring Joseph Quinn and Cosmo Jarvis that doesn’t hold back on intensity. Plus, we tease what’s coming next week — from How to Train Your Dragon live action to Jurassic World Rebirth, The Girl with the Needle, and cult classic Punishment Park.

🎥 This episode covers:

Weapons (2025) – Zach Cregger’s chilling follow-up to Barbarian

Freakier Friday – Jamie Lee Curtis & Lindsay Lohan return

East of Wall – Quietly powerful indie from Kate Beecroft

Invincible Swordsman – High-fantasy martial arts spectacle

Alien: Earth – New Disney+/Hulu Alien series

Warfare – Intense Iraq War drama

Hey everyone, I’m Steve Stebbing and welcome back to What the Hell Should I Watch? – your weekly rundown of what’s new, what’s streaming, and what’s actually worth your time. Chloe is back with me this week, and we’ve got a stacked show full of wild picks, passionate takes, and a whole lot of nerdy breakdowns.

👉 This week, I dive into DreamWorks’ The Bad Guys 2 – does this sequel live up to the animated original or is it just keeping the IP alive while we wait for Shrek 5? Chloe and I also break down The Naked Gun reboot with Liam Neeson – and yes, it’s actually funny. Spoof might finally be making a comeback!

We also explore:

  • 🎥 WWE: Unreal – Netflix’s behind-the-curtain docuseries that hardcore and casual fans alike can appreciate.
  • 🏈 American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez – another Ryan Murphy deep dive into crime and culture.
  • 🎬 Chloe’s reviews of Together, Later, 40 Acres, The Warriors (1979), and the return of King of the Hill Season 14.

Plus, we geek out over animation (Batman Ninja), media accreditation updates, movie scores, and even which actors totally nailed their casting.

Hey everyone, Steve Stebbing here — Chloe’s off this week, but I’ve got a packed lineup for you on What The Hell Should I Watch?

This week:
✨ Marvel kicks off Phase 6 with Fantastic Four: First Steps — Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby & Joseph Quinn lead a 1960s-inspired reboot that finally gets the team right (Galactus is no longer a fart cloud!).
🎬 One of my top 5 films of the year so far: Marlee Matlin: Not Alone Anymore, a powerful doc directed by Shoshana Stern that shines a light on triumph, abuse, and resilience.
⛳ Netflix swings big with Happy Gilmore 2 — Sandler, Shooter McGavin, Bad Bunny & MJF (!!) make for a nostalgic, ridiculous, and surprisingly fun sequel.
🎷 On Crave: Soundtrack to a Coup d’État, a wild and sobering jazz-meets-Cold-War doc that blends music, politics, and CIA chaos.
🐾 Plus, Disney+ drops Eyes of Wakanda, a sleek but slight animated Marvel spinoff.

And in physical media this week: Thunderbolts on 4K, Wes Anderson’s The Phoenician Scheme, Criterion’s All We Imagine As Light, and some vintage gems like EdTV and Bakshi’s animated Lord of the Rings.

👉 New episodes drop every Friday at 9am PT on stevestebbing.ca and YouTube.

Hey everyone, I’m Steve Stebbing and this week on What the Hell Should I Watch?, Chloe and I are diving deep into a big stack of fresh releases and streaming picks — some worth your time, others… not so much.

First up: the reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer — and yes, I boldly call this one a flaming trash fire with a side of legacy-bait. Then, I wax poetic about Eddington, Ari Aster’s hauntingly human pandemic-era political western (my #1 film of the year so far). Also on the docket: the hilarious and awkward rom-com Oh Hi!, the ghost-fu action flick Ghost Killer, and Nacho Vigalondo’s genre-bending Daniela Forever. Chloe also goes in hard on M3GAN 2.0 (spoiler: it’s a disaster).

PLUS: Blu-ray releases, horror podcast cameos, 4K collector rants, and shoutouts to the ghosts of Wells Fargo past. If you’re looking for reviews with heart, humor, and a side of venom, you’re in the right place.

Hey everyone, it’s Steve Stebbing here—and welcome back to What the Hell Should I Watch?, your weekly dose of what I’ve been watching, what Chloe’s been watching (she’s back this week!), and what you should probably be watching too.

This week, we’ve got a killer lineup of reviews—some buzzy, some gnarly, and a couple of deep Canadian gems you might not even know about. Here’s what we cover:

💥 Superman (2025) – James Gunn’s first big swing at the new DCU. David Corenswet as Clark Kent? Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane? Yes, please. It’s not perfect, but it’s got color, heart, and hope, which is exactly what I’ve been missing in superhero movies lately.

🧠 Together – This one’s wild. A wild body horror starring Dave Franco and Alison Brie that dives deep into relationships, trauma, and transformation. Chloe didn’t see it yet, but she will—and I can’t wait to hear her take.

🌍 Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight – A poignant directorial debut from Embeth Davidtz (yes, Miss Honey from Matilda) based on the memoir by Alexandra Fuller. Set during the Bush War in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), this one is powerful, raw, and full of tough truths.

🌾 40 Acres – A bold Canadian post-apocalyptic survival film with Danielle Deadwyler that had me glued from start to finish. It looks gorgeous and the tension? Dialled all the way in. Finally, Deadwyler is in a movie that delivers.

❄️ The Oak Room – A moody little Canadian thriller starring RJ Mitte (Breaking Bad) that feels like it was ripped straight from a stage play. Lots of monologue work, with a rich atmosphere.

🧛 Sinners – One of my favorite horror films this year. Think From Dusk Till Dawn meets post-WWII Southern Gothic. Jack O’Connell steals scenes left and right. Chloe called it “Vampires the musical,” and I stand by it.

🎮 Until Dawn – Is it a good horror movie? Kinda. Is it a good adaptation of the game? Not really. Chloe and I get into the weeds about this one.

🔐 Locked – This Bill Skarsgård thriller totally flew under the radar, but I really liked it. Also: it’s extremely Vancouver, which you know I love.

📀 I also talk about some Blu-ray pickups and upgrades:

21 Grams

Seeking a Friend for the End of the World

The Purge (yep, the first one—still the best)

Fatal Beauty (Whoopi Goldberg in an ‘80s action flick directed by the other Tom Holland)

And of course, a nostalgic nod to Young People F*ing (aka YPF)

We also get nerdy with scores, cinematography, deep cuts, and a very Canadian sense of pride.

🎟️ Whether you’re prepping for VIFF 2025, hunting for weird horror, or just sick of the algorithm feeding you the same old stuff—this episode’s got something for you.

🧠 Hit subscribe if you want weekly reviews, festival buzz, and a whole lot of movie love from two unapologetic cinephiles.

Hey everyone! I’m Steve Stebbing, back again with another solo episode of What the Hell Should I Watch?—your weekly rundown of what’s worth watching in theaters, on streaming, and hitting your home library. This week is stacked with massive sequels, franchise reboots, and sleeper gems. Let’s go.

🎬 In Theaters & New Releases:

🏁 F1 – Brad Pitt stars in this high-octane IMAX spectacle about a veteran racer mentoring a rising star. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), this might be the movie event of 2025. It’s loud, fast, and beautifully crafted, with Hans Zimmer’s score and some serious eye-popping visuals.

🤖 M3GAN 2.0 – Jason Blum’s sequel takes a weird Terminator vs. Terminator turn and misses the AI horror magic that made the original pop. Allison Williams returns, but Gerard Johnstone might’ve lost the thread.

🦖 Jurassic World: Rebirth – The franchise gets a soft reboot with Gareth Edwards directing and Scarlett Johansson finally joining the dino world. It’s better than the last two entries, but still doesn’t hit the heights of the classics.

👑 The Old Guard 2 – Charlize Theron and crew are back, but this messy Netflix sequel is all setup with no soul. Even Uma Thurman can’t save it.

🇬🇧 Heads of State – Idris Elba and John Cena team up in a surprisingly fun Prime Video buddy action flick. From the director of Hardcore Henry and Nobody—it’s got punch, style, and laughs.

📀 Physical Media Picks:

🔫 Lethal Weapon (4K) – The Shane Black-penned classic gets the anniversary upgrade it deserves. Still one of the best buddy cop films ever.

🔥 St. Elmo’s Fire (4K) – The Brat Pack drama lands with commentary from the late Joel Schumacher. A key chapter in teen cinema.

😈 Sinners – Ryan Coogler’s latest lands on 4K with Michael B. Jordan and Jack O’Connell in a brutal, stylish neo-horror.

🌙 Until Dawn – The video game adaptation finally hits disc. Reviewed on the May 2 episode.

🦄 Death of a Unicorn (A24 Digipack) – Still a stunner on the shelf even if Chloe and I weren’t fans.

🩸 Hell of a Summer – Finn Wolfhard’s directorial debut is now on Blu-ray. Mixed reviews, but worth owning for genre fans.

🇦🇷 Nine Queens – The Argentine con-artist classic arrives via Sony Pictures Classics. A must-watch if you’ve only seen the U.S. remake Criminal.

👀 Next Week Preview:

Superman (James Gunn’s DC debut)

Daniela Forever (Nacho Vigalondo + Henry Golding = weird sci-fi love story?)

40 Acres (Canadian cinema spotlight)

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy (maybe.)

The Ballad of Wallis Island (finally?!?)

Hey everyone! Welcome back to What the Hell Should I Watch? I’m Steve Stebbing, still solo while Chloe’s away, and this week I’m digging into rage virus sequels, MCU redemption arcs, rom-com subversions, and more vintage gold for the Blu-ray shelf. Let’s go.

🎬 In Theaters & New Releases:

🧟 28 Years Later – Danny Boyle returns with a bold, emotional, and chaotic follow-up to 28 Days Later. Jodie Comer gives a hell of a performance in a powerful new story, and yes—it’s messy, but worth it.

💔 Materialists – Celine Song (Past Lives) returns with a sharp, stylish romantic dramedy starring Pedro Pascal, Dakota Johnson, and Chris Evans. Subtly funny and loaded with great moments.

💣 Bride Hard – Rebel Wilson stars in a Die Hard-meets-destination-wedding action comedy that completely fumbles the tone. A misfire.

🛡️ Ironheart (Disney+) – Marvel returns to Disney+ with a surprisingly focused origin story. Anthony Ramos, Dominique Thorne, and Alden Ehrenreich bring it together. Better than expected.

🤼‍♀️ The Queen of Villains (Netflix) – A gripping documentary about Dump Matsumoto and the heyday of women’s pro wrestling in Japan. Great energy and archival footage.

📀 Physical Media Picks:

💿 Three the Hard Way – Blaxploitation classic with Fred Williamson, Jim Brown, and Jim Kelly, finally on Blu-ray.

🩸 Karla – A dramatization of Canada’s most notorious killer couple: Karla Homolka and Paul Bernardo. Disturbing subject matter, handled with mixed results.

🕵️‍♀️ Murder, She Wrote: The Complete Series – The full Jessica Fletcher saga. 50 discs. 12 seasons. All the mystery.

🍸 Dr. No (4K) – Bond’s first outing looks fantastic.

👀 Next Week Preview:

F1

M3GAN 2.0

Jurassic World: Rebirth

Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy

The Ballad of Wallis Island
